Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow! – An ETC Movie Review

The no word review of this movie:

haaaahahhahahhahaha….HA!

Pretty much laughed through the whole thing. Every conceivable homage to cliched film-making was done. This movie was….

Godzilla meets Flash Gordon meets the Matrix meets the Wizard of Oz meets Star Wars meets The Lord of the Rings meets Indiana Jones meets Noah meets Tarzan meets Jurassic Park meets War of the Worlds….

and lets just thrown in Glenda the Good Witch for good measure.

This movie was so CAMPY it was great. I recommend it for anyone who just wants to suspend reality for a couple of hours and laugh. Not that it was meant to be humorous but you can tell that the director was having a field day playing up all the various hyper stylized film elements of the movie. They don't even try to bring reality into the plot.

Perfect.

Gwyneth Paltrow is great, Jude Law…eh….best when he is interacting with Gwyneth. There definitely wasn't enough of Angelina Jolie (Franky Cook.) Her character was silly. They all were. My favorite lines of the movie were from her "Alert the amphibious squadron!" and "save the bunnies!" That's why I picked the picture above.

The artwork was beautiful in my opinion. I loved the randomness of the environments, the drama of the music score and the basic themes of man's creativeness run amuck in the name of improving mankind. It plays off the theme that everytime mankind tries to be God, things get a little out of hand (like end of the world out of hand.) That theme has been coming up a lot in recent years.

But to end on a note that does right by the movie….you have to go see it just for the final scene: It involves a cow headed into space, Space Captain and Polly Perkins fighting a "Darth Something" character and an amazing gift of tongues to find the emergency release button.

::: still laughing :::

Randy, Kris and I went to see this yesterday afternoon! I loved it! It reminded me so much of the Sunday afternoons of my youth when all the campy 40’s attempts at Sci-Fi would fill the television screen and my lonely lazy afternoon.
I seem to prefer movies that provoke thought and challenge my perspective (foreign films rank high on my video-rental list and ticket purchases), but sometimes I enjoy a film that is just fun!
Good review, sir!
