I am in the Newark airport and I can see New York City from where I sit. I love NYC and have been *in* the city twice. I have been through/around it countless times. Ever since 9/11 I am actually very fond of the city on a heart level too. There's just something about NYC that is amazing.

So, for a different fun kind of Friday post… Have you ever been to NYC? Any stories to share? If you haven't been to NYC would you want to visit? why or why not?

I love NYC! Next to New England, NYC is very close to my heart. When I was in college, I used to go there and be a part of a church that does street evangelism with teens during a summer program. I also went there a few times with my college to help the church during spring break. I love the people there, the atmosphere, even the smell (NYC has a very distinct smell). One memory among many great ones was sitting and talking to an elderly man for about 2 1/2 hours about Jesus. He had been alive during the holocost and had family go through that. He had always struggled with the “why’s” of that horrible time. As we talked, he was able to get to know Jesus a little more. At the end of the conversation, he said he was going to visit the church that he lived near… he said he wanted to “get to know this Jesus a little more.” I remember being so excited that I was able to be a part of something like that, as I had never done anything like that before.
Years later, I looked back on that memory when the towers fell, as I had been sitting in the park that was right next to one of the towers.
I have only been back to NYC one time since 9/11 because I have so many memories of that area, and I needed to go through a grieving time… but I have been thinking about going back for a visit soon. I miss it very much.

Thanks for sharing that Dawn. What a poignant testimony. I remember walking by the towers on one of my trips (long time ago) and we didn’t have time to go in. I regret that. My friend Delana was a grief counselor for the Red Cross while they were still recovering remains shortly after they fall. The stories she shared…awful but life-changing. She was deeply impacted. When she was there it was really alllllll listening but from what I understand several of the people she counseled stayed in contact and she was eventually given the opportunity to share her faith. Again, thanks for sharing Dawn…anyone else?

Three times “in” the city. First time was senior year in highschool with my art class to visit some museums in late December. Dang! it was cold! Then two more times for gallery visits, I didn’t really do anything touristy, but I did enjoy Central Park in the snow. All three visits were in my late teens/ early twenties. It’s time to go back as a real grown up…

What a great time to visit the city…young and full of adventure. I would imagine you would get something different out of the city when you go back.
