Fred is the man I wanted to see speak the most. I was not disappointed. I really like the guy. He did come across as warm and knowledgeable. I think he would be a good President. The following is my notes and paraphrasing what he said…
We were blessed from the very beginning. The founding fathers reminded us of the scriptures and that man was capable to climb to great heights if inspired but also prone to error. Our rights come from God and not from any government. Our institution of federalism is a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. (Division of power on the federal and state level.) Our nation has shed more blood for the people of the world. We are steeped in history as a nation sacrificing for honor and the common good.
He has a 100% pro-life voting record. Stem cells… you don’t create life in order to destroy it. It took life’s experiences to teach me and I have absorbed many blessings. My head was always there but now my heart is fully engaged with my head. ( he said that the sonogram of his youngest daughter helped to make that connection.) No legislation will pass my desk that funds or supports this procedure (abortion) without a veto. It is a shame that our Judicial branch of government imposes “raw judicial power.” Roe V. Wade was an example and the latest example is same sex marriage. Judicial activists have taken marriage between one man and one woman and turning it on its head. I propose a constitutional ammendment that will stop this judicial activism in it’s tracks.
Brief interruption here. The above emphasized statement (my emphasis) was perceived by many people that he was now for a federal marriage ammendment. I don’t actually take that statement as meaning that. It could be that he has another amendment in mind that deals with the process of the Judiciary directly and not over a specific issue. Because he didn’t elaborate, we will have to see what turns up in the next few days. Reporters were asking about this today.
More Thompson …
“Federal government can’t cure everything that is wrong and shouldn’t try. But everyone has a pulpit and the greatest one is the President of the United States and I will not be afraid to use it.” May God give us the strength to know and do what is right for the country.” A bunch of people chanted “Go Fred Go! repeatedly as he exited the stage.
This is very true, in this country we all do have a “pulpit” or soapbox or blog or … something to express ourselves. I pray it never changes. A lot of people in this crowd love Thompson.
