Have you read the book 'Ex-Gays'? Is it good?

No. I have read very long reviews of it that explain it in basic English for me but not the book itself.

I am not a scientist nor the son of one. It's just not how I roll.

However, the scientists, researchers and counselors I do know … love it. They can go on for days … and days …. and daysdaysdays … about it.

I watched the show, and good job to Alan. He usually does such a good job with press.

However, I did notice that when the numbers of those who experienced no change in orientation were mentioned (I believe it was 56%), while it was expressed compassionately that Exodus and others hadn’t ‘given up on them, yet’, it also seemed to come across that those who went through the ‘program’ and experienced no change in their orientation somehow ‘failed’, as if change in orientation is the only goal.

I understand that was the point of the book “Ex Gays?”, that change in orientation is possible, but I would have also liked to hear that even if someone experiences no change in orientation, he or she can definitely experience many other kinds of changes when deciding to pursue Jesus and no longer identify with his/her same sex attractions. I would liked to have heard Alan say, again, as he usually does, that the opposite of homosexuality is not heterosexuality; it is holiness.

But I understand he didn’t produce the segment. It was still a great story.

Hey Julie, I hear you on hearing more about the spectrum of “change” and I am actually writing about that right now :).

    Not an easy subject.

However, I know for a fact that it isn’t mine or Alan’s heart to ever communicate someone “failed.”

    Stay tuned.

Oh, I know that you guys would ever think or say someone failed. Sorry about that. It just seemed that the person who produced the story didn’t get the idea of the spectrum of change, as you call it (good term, btw) or didn’t think it important, at least for this story.

I love you guys! I love Exodus! And I like CBN, too.

Thank you very much Julie. I just wanted to be clear about the word “fail.” It is ascribed to Exodus that we use that word all the time when in truth we do not.

Specific to you though, I don’t think you thought that at all. Sorry for not differentiating specific to you and the word “fail” in general.

The book “Ex-gays?” does talk a lot about a wide variety of change. It is focussed mostly on actual orientation and identity change rather than the totality of worldview, “spiritual”, holistic identity and faith based changes in behavior regarding intimacy on a much larger and more complex level.

Cryptic enough :)… now you the challenge in writing about it.

It’s quite scientific and counselor–ish but I think you would find a lot of good and helpful information in it.
