Into The Ocean

Last week I woke up singing “Into The Ocean” by Blue October.  I looked up the lyrics and the following verses stood out to me.

Where is the coastguard
I keep looking each direction
For a spotlight, give me something
I need something for protection
Maybe flotsam junk will do just fine
the jetsam sunk, I’m left behind
I’m treading for my life believe me
(How can I keep up this breathing)

Not knowing how to think
I scream aloud, begin to sink
My legs and arms are broken down
With envy for the solid ground
I’m reaching for the life within me
How can one man stop his ending
I thought of just your face
Relaxed, and floated into space

In my walk with Christ it’s always amazing whenever the Spirit grabs my attention and that worshipful yearning rises to behold Him face to face.  It’s at that moment that I do indeed relax.  I haven’t quite floated into space but drifting off in prayer is a cool thing.  This interaction with the world right before encountering the Divine is what I thought of when I read the above verses.  The frantic day to day of trying to make decisions just because they can be made only to end up flailing around searching for Him.  Then once fixated upon God, things take their proper place.  Some see it as resignation to the inevitable.  I see it as bliss.

Don’t judge me ::: laugh :::

But then I thought, “That’s deep but,   … this is like … one of the most depressing songs ever.”  It’s got a catchy tune, unique, cleverly written … so its no wonder I like the song but why am I singing it at 6:30 am while brushing my teeth?

So I submitted this odd earworm to the Lord.   This verse, Ephesians 4:14-16, came forward …

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

And as I was talking with the worship team before our conference started for the day, Proverbs 2:6 came forward …

For the LORD gives wisdom,
and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

By 8:45 am, I had a full on devotional happening that blessed my socks off!  I don’t know anything about Blue October but their song was a great reminder of how desperate life can be sometimes when left to fate (one of the symbols in the above video … the three women/fates.)  It also speaks to a common metaphor that every honest human being can relate to at some point in their life.  I also like that the song calls upon the visage of someone that brings a sense of peace.  For me that is Christ… a wonderful meditation.

He lifts me out of the flotsam junk to take my place in the Body of Christ with words of knowledge, understanding and love.  All the while mindful to stay focussed on Him and not the tumultuous seas of cunning schemes that surround us in the wall of sound.

Focus on Him.
