The Chattering Class

Tonight I caught up on all the political news for the first time in about two weeks: Obama and Clinton are fighting like two cats in a burlap bag. There are cries of “YOUR and ELITIST! No…YOU’RE an ELITIST” being thrown around.

… and McCain is still old … and kinda’ funny.

Tonight I watched the dude filling in for Glenn Beck. I forget his name but he is pretty good. He mentioned that maybe this recent hullabaloo about Obama saying “elitist” things, about people with guns and having religion being “bitter,” is just something “the chattering class” finds interesting and that the average person may not care.

Which got me thinking … is this “chattering class” an expression of an elitist mindset? The “chattering class” label seems to be a new meme being bandied about and I find it intriguing for some reason. Maybe it’s an old label and I am just now noticing it but … its sticking out to me more than the no brainer story of politicians acting like elitists.

Well, unfortunately, (and I see this in my own life as well) politics in this country has been reduced to a form of entertainment. We love the discord. The chaos. My friends and I drink beer and watch the debates like we'd watch a football game. And then we "chatter" about it. People like Al Franken, Bill O'Reilly and even Stuart Shephard (Focus on the Family's "Stoplight" guy) only add fuel to this fire.

I completely agree. It's pretty much all infotainment now. The problem is that it is infotainment with potentially a high price to pay. I worry that the chattering class is drowning out substantive dialog. I am not saying everything should be debate worthy but if we are chattering just to chatter... what's the point?

But then again... some people will listen to Stuart and not Bill O'Reilly and someone else instead of either of them, so ... I love the freedom to chatter but get disturbed by the anxious parroting of most of the "chattering class."

LOL... very true.

God help us, I wished there was some body I felt like I was actually voting FOR and instead, I will be voting against the burlap bag kids!
