Rick Warren’s Faith Forum with Obama and McCain - Ask It Basket

Greg asks

*Should Rick Warren court Presidential Candidates and possibly support an abortion rights candidate just so he can promote social justice and Green policies?”

When I think of “courting” in political realms I think of superficial flattery and pandering. So, I might be thrown by that word. But this question, for me, points to the broader issue of the merit of Warren’s event and who should Christians support. The last I checked, neither candidate has stated, “I want to be President to glorify Jesus Christ and bring more people into relationship with Him.” It’s very complex. Both candidates could be accused of promoting sin in public policy. Both candidates could be accused of ungodly decisions. At the same time, both candidates must be very talented to be the two men being considered for President. I think Pastor Warren is doing a great thing by having this forum and I hope it is very revealing for the Body of Christ and the country at large.

What I love about this election cycle is that we (socially/fiscally conservatives) aren’t getting exactly what we want. Why do I love that? Because we were lied to in the past. Candidates tickled our ears and then gave away our seat at the table. I “love” this because it is more authentic and it will force people to make an informed decision (hopefully.)

Now, personal opinion, Obama is a false prophet speaking out of both sides of his mouth and will do just about anything to get power. Well, it’s just an opinion … ::: smile ::: At the same time, I have a McCain widget on my blog but I am not thrilled with the overall prospect of his Presidency. I don’t want the same ol’ Washington games and McCain’s been really good at them. Sure he is probably more independent than most, but come on, the man has been inside the beltway for 35 years. Even so, some of my Christian friends who run in such circles had deep concerns that were addressed very well by McCain personally. As a result, they feel much better about supporting him. When I learned about that, that is when the McCain widget went up on my blog. I am hoping that the side of McCain they saw will be evident tonight.

What to do with those Crazy Christians who are actually going to vote for Obama? Love them, try to change their minds if the door opens. I don’t have to understand their reasoning in order to extend gracious disagreement. All of the policy issues, not just one or two, are VERY serious.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I personally am not interested in blogging about those specific policy issues right now (y’all can have at it in the comments if you want.) I am not doing a whole lot along these lines lately, but when I do, I only do so privately or offline.

At the end of the day … I have to spend eternity with these Crazy Christians voting for Obama :). I, just like they will, voice my opinion but we don’t have to ruin fellowship or take some superior/inferior stance with on another.

Tonight I will be with my Church Life Group at dinner so I won’t be able to watch the forum. I will either watch it online or just read the talking head’s opinions later.

I don’t often prayer blog but I kind of want to right now …

Lord please reveal McCain and Obama’s true character and give the Body “eyes to see” from Your perspective. Please bless both candidates with Your Truth that will impart true godly wisdom. They both claim to know You Lord so I pray that their understanding and relationship with You would deepen as a result of this event and process. Amen.

Thanks for the question Greg!

UPDATE: later the same evening - Fox News has a good summary of the whole event. I like this quote from Pastor Warren …

“We believe in the separation of church and state, but we do not believe in the separation of faith and politics because everyone has a world view,” Warren said to cheers of the crowd from the pews of his church in Lake Forest, Calif., at the start of the forum.

UPDATE 8/18/8 - La Shawn Barber is going after Obama’s stand on abortion being hypocritical of his quoting the scripture out of Matthew on “… the least of these.”

Randy, that is one of the most genuine, yet Christ-like statements I've seen on a Christian blog in a very long time. God Bless you!

I can't seem to sleep [while the wife and dog are sawing logs] so I started reading I Cor. chapters 8,9,10 and 11 in The Message. I mention this because I have appreciated your ability to speak your convictions while not [purposely] offending another. This is your blog... you can say what you want, but you value the thoughts of the other person. Paul strongly reprimanded the Corinthians for doing things [their freedom to eat meat offered to idols, their mature knowledge of certain subjects, their arguing and debauchery at the LORD's table] that would cause another to loose faith, stumble or sin against their own scruples! I don't believe I have ever heard a sermon from this text... sad to say. We need to hear it desperately! All the hateful, hurtful, and disrespectful things I've heard from the pulpit and from the Laity. [didn't mean to go there again : ) I haven't read or viewed anything about the forum...yet, but I whole heartedly agree with your viewpoint. But, why can't there be a third political party based on social, moral and fiscal responsibility? A party that draws on the strengths of both existing parties and then some? Too idealistic I guess? Peace-out.

Thanks for adding the scriptural context and affirmation.

There are other parties out there actually but they don't have any where near the support or leverage as the two in existence. The Libertarian party (usually socially liberal while fiscally conservative) is the closes we have to an influential third party. I honestly believe that in my lifetime we will see the two party system completely fracture.

But regardless of how many parties there are, we have to do the hard work at the grass roots for any real change to take place.
