Prop 8 Simulcast in California About Protecting Marriage

I watched Alan share his testimony tonight LIVE from here in Orlando to a whole bunch of churches out in California rallying for support of Prop 8. Prop 8 would constitutionally define marriage (in that state) as being between one man and one woman. Also, my new co-worker (who is absolutely amazing) Yvette Schneider, will be doing something similar targeted to youth and young adults the weekend after this one. She is a fantastic speaker and very intelligent.
Exodus is not the political machine activists try to make us out to be. Our public policy involvement is a very small fraction of what we do … if we do it. These events are the first in a very long time of advocating for specific policy issues. Even here we share the same message we share in non-public policy events.
The vast majority of what we share in these events are the truth of our testimonies. While supporting this effort, we also try very hard to call these audiences to not be tempted to beat people over the head with Truth but to uphold their conviction all the while extending much more abundant grace. At the end of the day, November 5th will come around and no matter who “wins” or “loses” we all lose if either side allows the process to alienate us from our neighbors.
There has been too much of that already and Alan was very bold to address that problem within the church and call us to fulfill our great capacity to love.
And in a civil society, among reasonable people, you can have VERY strong disagreements and still afford dignity and respect. That’s my opinion anyway.
When I had a change of heart and decided to move beyond my gay identity/worldview and seek out the possibility of change in my sexual orientation, I didn’t have to worry about divorce, child custody or property battles. For that I am glad.
Now, I am not currently slated to do any speaking. I only plan to help my co-workers and to blog about it here from time to time.
