MODESTO-October 13—In a violent display of intolerance, an opponent of Proposition 8 attacked and seriously injured a man who was volunteering on Sunday for the initiative to define marriage as between and a man and a woman.

Prop. 8 supporter, Jose Nunez, 37, was brutally assaulted while waiting to distribute yard signs to other supporters of the initiative after church services at the St. Stanislaus Parish in Modesto.

The assailant grabbed about 75 signs and yelled at Nunez accusingly, “What do you have against gays!” Although Nunez replied that he had nothing against gays, he was attacked anyway. The assailant punched Nunez in the left eye and ran off with the signs.

Nunez, his eye dripping with blood, walked into a building on church grounds where a fellow parishoner called 911. Police and paramedics responded to the scene …

When I embraced a gay identity I was violently attacked by some for not hiding who I thought I was at that time. I was assaulted on two separate occasions (one written about here.) Now that I am on this side of the fence (living life beyond a gay identity/ideology) I have had very serious threats against me and especially some of my friends with similar testimonies.

I say this because I know that seething anger exists on both sides. It doesn’t surprise me that some kook used his hatred as an excuse to attack an innocent person passing out yard signs.

Unfortunately this isn’t a new phenomenon. A few years ago a man who embraced a gay identity murdered a elderly lady who was trying to share with him her opinions on homosexuality. Another example was when a young man was murdered by his partner when he shared with him that he wanted to overcome homosexuality and asked him to move out of his apartment.

There are more victims of course including those who embrace a gay identity. The attacks I suffered in the past were nightmares but just look at what happened to gay blogger Chris Crain. You can’t look at that picture and not understand (maybe not agree but at least understand) why “gay rights” is what he believes is the road to true justice for the same sex attracted. He and other victims of assault, because of their same sex attractions or religious convictions, deserve compassion and protection equally the same as everyone who is a victim should be compassionately protected.

However, crazy people will look at Chris, and maybe even the Prop 8 volunteer, and say that the only justice would be to fight back violently against some other innocent people. So we must roundly condemn physical violence and pray it does not escalate.
