The title of this article is … weird but overall its a decent and informative article.

African-American voters in Florida are a reliably solid base for Democratic candidates and are expected to turn out in high numbers next month to vote for Barack Obama.

But if polls hold true, nearly two-thirds of them may break with their candidate - and other black political leaders - on the state’s controversial marriage initiative.

Organizers on both sides think African-Americans are the crucial swing vote on Amendment 2. The measure would add a definition of marriage to the state constitution and outlaw any other union that is the substantial equivalent.

[From Jacksonville.com: Metro: Story: Marriage amendment divides black community]

In the article it says that some in the black community are suspicious of the organizers of this amendment and their true intentions. I can understand why. The Black community was highly courted by the Bush re-election campaign and the marriage issue was used to help bolster their confidence that he was concerned about this very crucial issue.

Then, while maintaining he supported traditional marriage, the topic somehow just disappeared from the radar right after the election.

I love that Bush supports marriage but why did the RNC leaders completely drop the ball?

hmmmm …. suspicious indeed.

However, I actually know the people behind this amendment here in Florida. I lamented the 2004-05 situation with them directly and they completely understood and agreed. I know for a fact they are doing this with good intentions because they believe in what the amendment stands for. The timing is not to manipulate for Republicans favor in other races. It is because amendments like these have to coincide with major elections. And with this issue, time is of the essence.

So, I know I am a white Republican and for those that care about that type of thing, my input will only go so far. But I can say that I personally grew vary wary of the Republican party after the ‘04 election cycle. Even so, the folks here in Florida pushing for Amendment 2 and happen to be Republicans (because not all of them are) not only heard my concerns, they exhibit nothing but true intentions. They want this amendment passed for its own merits regardless of how you cast your vote for President.

A vote for McCain would be great (in my personal opinion) but not necessary to vote for Amendment 2.
