The Gay Mafia That’s Redefining Liberal Politics – TIME article

Fascinating Article. I don't agree that the gay dilemma is a "civil rights" battle but … It's interesting to me that some have adopted the very tactics they decry.

That raises questions: What does a civil rights movement look like in an era of massive wealth? Can you still inspire a grass-roots movement when all the street troops know that the billionaires can just write bigger checks? And is it possible that the left has become a movement as coldly obsessed with money as it always assumed the right was?

[From The Gay Mafia That's Redefining Liberal Politics - TIME]

A lesbian activist, who I would consider a friend but haven't talked to in a while, once told me, "When it comes to gay activism all you need to know can be found in 'The Art of War' by Sun Tzu and by following the money." She went on to say that gay porn had funded a lot of things. I never found evidence that would back that up. The above article seems to suggest that the money, today, is coming from tech efforts and heirs of fortunes. Anyway, it is an interesting article.

This seems awfully similar (in title and content) to a story in the July 2008 issue of The Advocate: The Gay Goodfellas.

today's world is a marketplace of ideas. everyone is out selling theirs and the ones with more money have better commercials. thats how this is being fought. thats why Obama has a half hour of prime time and there are various commercials for “No on Eight.” as my mom (God bless her,) says “Money Talks and B.S. Walks” either you have great ideas that can speak to people, or you spend your money trying to blind consumers with pretty lights.

Your mother sounds like a wise woman. That's true for both sides of the “culture war.”

Something seems terribly lacking in an article focusing on money buying politics (especially when it comes to LGBT issues) that fails to acknowledge the stream of money pouring into Yes On 8 coffers from outside groups. In our current political system, money does talk … it talked support for Prop 8 up from a 17% trail.

Are you ready to say the same to allllll the articles that did focus on the pro prop 8 money that had zero mention of the gay money?

Because there are dozens of those as opposed to the two I have found on the pro-gay money.

Brian, this moral equivalency thing your doing here is indulgent. The focus of the article is the focus of the article.

Maybe “indulgent” isn't the best word. I am not into channeling but somehow the spirit of Simon Cowell must have got into me.

I should have said something like making a moral equivalency argument is “easy.” It really obfuscates the point of the article which is to point out that there are rich homosexual people playing the same nefarious background games as the “vast right wing conspiracy.”
