Two Moments at Macy’s

Jewish Sales Lady with New York City Accent we will call Annette bobs her head around and throws up one hand, "They are already playing Christmas music! Can you believe it? I am going to be sick of Christmas music by the time it gets here and I don't even celebrate Christmas!" She arranges my purchases, ": "You are going to look sharp in this!"

Me: "Thank you and thank you for your help."

I had told her I was shopping for a new outfit for a video shoot I am doing tomorrow.

Annette: "So … what did you say you were buying this for?"

Me: "A video shoot."

Annette: "What kind of video?"

Me: "A Teaching video."

Annette looks a little irritated that I am not forthcoming with more information: "Teaching what?"

Me: "it's a teaching for a Christian ministry."

Annette drops her head, fidgets with the clothes, "I do the Hanukkah thing at Christmas time."

I smile really big, "That's great, I hope you have a blessed time this year." Annette wasn't exactly pensive but did look a little more relaxed after that.

She asked me if I wanted to apply for the Macy's credit card and I said no because I was allergic to credit cards. I got in lots of trouble with them before and I don't want to go back there again. And then an amazing thing happened. She told me some very intimate details about what her life was like. She shared about her struggles as a single Mom raising four kids and a couple of other things that I will keep in prayer. That type of thing happens to me pretty often, people just tell me stuff. I am honored when they do and hope to be faithful to pray for them.

When I left she said, "Merry Christmas" and smiled.

I said, "Happy Hanukkah" as I walked off with a wave. Her smile got bigger.

Then as I was leaving the store, a beautiful African American lady was wearing this AWESOME wrap. I don't have the fashion gene so I am not one to stop and get all OMG(osh) about fashion … but … the lady had on one of the most gorgeous wraps I have ever seen. I seriously wanted to come home and draw as result. I was inspired. And for the third time in my life I said to a complete stranger (female), "Ma'am, can I say something to you real quick? She turned and looked and said, "Alright." I told her that I absolutely loved her outfit and she nearly tripped over herself thanking me. She said, "You are too kind, what a sweet thing to say. Thank you so much."

Not only did I have fun talking to two ladies I don't know and might not ever see again, I got some great bargains at Macy's, didn't use a credit card … and I am down two pants sizes! I love shopping trips like that.

I love asking Jewish people if they know what tribe they are from. Such interesting conversations ensue and I'm always in awe of being able to trace one's lineage all the way back to Abraham and Adam himself. So far, the only Jewish people who have known their tribe were Levites.

Congrats on the smaller trousers. Wish I could have seen the wrap!

hmmm…. I never thought to ask that question before. That's interesting.

Yeah… those Levites were awesome. Thanks for the kudos on the pants.

Pardon me, but do you have “Levi” Jeans?

jk.

Cheryl, I love the question, too, and may start using it. Fun.

Randy, be sure to let us know which art piece is based on the wrap!

Blessings!

I think that pretty much only members of the tribes of Juda and Levi (and a few people from two others) can know which tribe they're from, due to what happened to the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel.

But I could be totally wrong.

Thank you for your email! I am currently attending the National Youth Workers' Convention through Monday, November 24th. I will have very limited access to email until I return on Tuesday, so please be patient with any delay I have getting back with you.
