Hollywood Is The New Trainer – A Gym Update

by Randy Thomas on June 16, 2009 · 0 comments

Just so you all know, if you don’t already, I blog about a lot of things and one of the reasons I blog about the gym and health is that one… it’s a big part of my life right now.  Two, many people who pray for me read my blog and three it’s another way of keeping me accountable.

While I still like Hercules, it’s just not easy touching base with him to talk about doing the personal trainer thing.  Then I remembered a couple of weeks ago that a friend’s childhood friend sent out an email about her brother who just became a personal trainer.  I dug that email out of the archives and gave him a call.

We met for lunch today and dude looks very similar to a particular Hollywood star so, for the purposes of the blog, I will call him Hollywood.

The great thing is that because I came to know about his training through a mutual friend, he knows I am a Christian, where I work and all that.  He’s never personally had to deal with the issues our ministry addresses but is understanding of what we do and didn’t seemed bothered at all. He was actually supportive.  He is a Christian himself.

With regard to exercise and nutrition. He certainly knows what he is talking about.  I learned more about proteins, the glycemic index and the dangers of high fructose corn syrup than I ever though possible in 90 minutes.

cool.

His training fees aren’t anywhere  near what I expected … but he ain’t cheap either.  Drat!  BUT, he works with several other trainers and they have a private gym that they take their clients too.  So that’s nice.  When I grimace, whine and curse no one will see me and because he is a Christian he can pray with me for repentance afterwards :) .  I’ll keep my other gym membership of course because I can only afford to meet with “Hollywood” twice a week.

Anyway, my epic weight loss/good health odyssey continues.  I am down 20 pounds from last August but it’s time I get it together for realz.  I am at that age that it REALLY starts to matter that I stop yo-yo’ing and get into a healthy pattern before I hit the true middle age stride and my last half of mortal life.  Prayers would be appreciated and of course … I will try to make these type of posts as humorous as possible.

I hope Hercules doesn’t squash me for hiring someone else.  I still think the Lord orchestrated us becoming friends at the gym.  He’s hilarious and very encouraging.  He also said he would be glad to answer any questions whether I hired him or not.  He’s a good guy too.  OH and strange fact BOTH, Hercules and Hollywood are firefighter/paramedics.

::: pointing my finger at a certain jokester ::: watch it bud. ::: grin :::

Keep on it! It is worth the sweat. I started going to the gym some years back. I am not religious when it comes to the work out, but I must say that over the years I feel so much better and have so much more energy.Good luck with the new trainer.

Awesome. I have been much more into health and fitness the past five or so years than any other time in my life. Now, I just have to quit yo-yo'ing on my diety. Prayers would be appreciated.

Okay, I do fabulous with watching what I eat (portions, protein/carb/fat content, etc.) and despise exercise. I was gonna say struggle with exercise, but that would imply I AM exercising. And I'm not. I have and will again. But right now I'm not. still. So, I'm going to encourage you to keep making healthy choices (but not the frozen meals with the same name!) about your food, and to celebrate the variety of flavor and texture you can enjoy while eating healthily. . . and you can nag at me to ride my exercise bike and do set/rep work for overall strength/flexibility. Ick. Congratulations on starting when you're so young! I didn't make the decision to be a healthy old person until I was 50! I'm still not where I want to be, but I am much closer than I was 3.75 yrs. ago! Yay for Randy!

so… did you ride your exercise bike yet? You said I could nag you. It's not often you get permission to nag :) .thanks for being a cheerleader :)

Are you sure it’s "Randog" and not "Randawg"? :-)
Good luck on your fitness quest. I truly believe that we must treat our mortal bodies with the respect and dignity of worthy of God’s having created us in His image. Our bodies truly are our earthly temples.
In Peace,
Peter

Um, no. BUT I did go look at it ::sheepish grin:: and discovered the miles/calories display thing needs batteries. I couldn't ride if I didn't know how long, how far & how many calories burned on the ride. Obviously. Ha. And I did tell my dh to remind me to get in there & ride, even though I will glare, or roll my eyes, at him when he does. I also found my hand weights so I can do strength work, too. I'm going to start with 15 min. on the bike, and then weight work (circuit training style) for another 20. Sigh. I am. Really, I am. Nag away! Accountability is a good thing! : )

I don’t know how you drive home afterwards. Why can’t you eat by following portion controls and checking calories? Your going to want to keep this up for life, right? If I had to hire that man now, I’m older than you, I’d be in my grave. The flesh is weak but the body can be even weaker.

have you tried tripoding? Use a weight bar as a tripod/something to help you balance. I’ve got FMS, so I find some exercises difficult and need to do them differently. Stand the weight bar on its side so you are holding it vertically, and lunge with the opposite leg. I think. Try the other leg if you go all wobbly to the side! Unless you’re lunging with the weight bar over your shoulders? If that is the case, then no one can help you…. mwah ha ha haaaa… except you! God bless you, matey -x-

Hey, Randog (name I will use when any exercise post appears) Your experience brings back memories when I joined a health club shortly after accepting Christ as my Savior. My trainer had pushed me very hard, and the pleaser that I am, I kept pushing to the edge. After the session was over, I went back to the locker room and began having a tremendous headache that became worse by the minute. I was laying on a bench in the locker room. And suddenly I was prompted by an inner voice to pray for the headache to be gone. I kept ignoring the voice’s prompting(why I did I don’t really know)but then I finally said ok. I will pray. The headache and all distress vanished immediately.I thought, "Wow, God did this!" I think that was probably the first time that I realized that God works in the small things as well as the large. That was nearly 27 years ago, and I have not forgotten that lesson.

Hey Richard! I’m glad to see someone older than I making posts on this site lol I’m 57 but feel like 24 :) So do you live in Nashville?, Las Vegas?, neither? My brother has a home in Summerlin, a suburb of Las Vegas. And Nashville is one of my favorite cities to visit. I have enjoyed reading your posts!

Hey, Richard! I have always liked Nashville. It still has a small town atmosphere to it. And I really like the Tracz trail. I drove by Amy Grant’s home in Franklin one time when I was there–not ostentatious at all and such a pretty area. I live in Tucson, Arizona. We still have wildlife–deer, javelinas(wild boars), with an occasional bear or mountain lion. I do enjoy Nashville’s greenery though :)
