Of Leg Lunges and Battling "The OUCH" – A Gym Update

by Randy Thomas on July 29, 2009 · 0 comments

WARNING: The following is a dramatic re-enactment of actual events …

Feet shoulder width apart? … yep

Toes pointing forward? … yep

Head up … breathing? … yep and yep

:::: left foot lunge forward :::

ok… your feet are all over the place when you lunge, remember what Mr. Hollywood said, put your hands on your hips for balance …  resume …

::: right foot lunge forward :::

much better

::: a little while later :::

Feet shoulder width apart? … who cares … Mr. Hollywood cares … ok FINE …

Toes pointing forward? … I’m not sure, they are numb

Head up … breathing? … Can’t tell … my eyes are closed so I won’t see myself grimacing in the mirror. I think everyone in the gym can hear me breathing

::: set two, rep 13 ::: ENTIRE left leg and anything related to it SEIZES up ::: The following happens in the span of a split second ::: forward lunge :::

OUCHOUCHOUCHOUCH WHATTHE … OUCH … OHDEARSWEET … STOP! … STOPIT! OUCHOUCHOUCH … OUCH.

HOW can you have a CRAMP that goes all the way from your BEHIND, down your thigh … quadraceps … whatever, across your calf and even your SMALL TOE?

How am I going to stabilize? … not fall over?  How do I get back to a standing position?  This is not fair, not right and I doubt Obamacare is going to help me right now (sorry, it slipped out… and it probably wouldn’t.)

::: pressing through my cramping heel :::

OUCHOUCHOUCHOUCH… OUCH OUCH

… well at least I am standing up now and nobody is rushing over to help the “forty-wonderful” guy up off the floor.  Not that I struggle with pride or anything.  The, cramp now known as “THE OUCH” actually dissipated quickly with some stretching and moving on to other exercises.  But at the end of my workout I went back to that corner of the gym and actually did a full third rep.

Not because I struggle with pride or anything … you know …

I defeated The Ouch and kept pretty good form while doing so … mostly.

have you tried tripoding? Use a weight bar as a tripod/something to help you balance. I've got FMS, so I find some exercises difficult and need to do them differently. Stand the weight bar on its side so you are holding it vertically, and lunge with the opposite leg. I think. Try the other leg if you go all wobbly to the side! Unless you're lunging with the weight bar over your shoulders? If that is the case, then no one can help you…. mwah ha ha haaaa… except you! God bless you, matey -x-

Hey, Randog (name I will use when any exercise post appears) Your experience brings back memories when I joined a health club shortly after accepting Christ as my Savior. My trainer had pushed me very hard, and the pleaser that I am, I kept pushing to the edge. After the session was over, I went back to the locker room and began having a tremendous headache that became worse by the minute. I was laying on a bench in the locker room. And suddenly I was prompted by an inner voice to pray for the headache to be gone. I kept ignoring the voice's prompting(why I did I don't really know)but then I finally said ok. I will pray. The headache and all distress vanished immediately.I thought, “Wow, God did this!” I think that was probably the first time that I realized that God works in the small things as well as the large. That was nearly 27 years ago, and I have not forgotten that lesson.

Hey Richard! I'm glad to see someone older than I making posts on this site lol I'm 57 but feel like 24 :) So do you live in Nashville?, Las Vegas?, neither? My brother has a home in Summerlin, a suburb of Las Vegas. And Nashville is one of my favorite cities to visit. I have enjoyed reading your posts!Don

Hey, Richard! I have always liked Nashville. It still has a small town atmosphere to it. And I really like the Tracz trail. I drove by Amy Grant's home in Franklin one time when I was there–not ostentatious at all and such a pretty area. I live in Tucson, Arizona. We still have wildlife–deer, javelinas(wild boars), with an occasional bear or mountain lion. I do enjoy Nashville's greenery though :)
