Book Review - The Shack by William P. Young

by Randy on September 5, 2008

shackover.jpgLaura posted some of her thoughts regarding the book on Facebook and I posted the following comment.

… I JUST finished listening to the unabridged audio book of this today on the treadmill.

I didn’t have a problem with the personification of God as a woman because it was in a fictional setting. BUT, wisdom is personified as a woman in Proverbs and when I was a young Christian I thought that was very cool.

Granted, Andy Comiskey’s talk about true femininity and masculinity was very insightful to me on the importance of finding both in the Creator’s Being but He is called Father for very important reasons.

I cried twice during the two weeks audio listening thing. Embarrassing to do on the treadmill :). Some of the mystical experiences freaked me out because of my own experience in prayer life. Even so, there were times it seemed SO completely preachy :). It might have been the guy reading the book to me but … I was like… come on already.

Anyway, I echo your warnings for people to be very careful. I am concerned about the theology behind how he dealt with the Trinity. BUT, when it comes to recovery and healing … *very* good stuff.

And that is basically how I feel. All the major, and it was major, theology discussions sounded a bit preachy at times and something made me nervous about them. I am not a theologian or the son of one so I won’t even try to pick it apart piece by piece but … there were a handful of times I thought, “well, I never heard that in the Bible.”

What a whirlwind in the Presidential election ‘08! Obama, sorry fellow Republicans, he did great last night whether we like it or not. There were a few times the conflict between his “change” theme but still propping up liberal culture war talking points made me groan. However, Obama is a statesman. He knows how to talk and compel people in a way we haven’t seen in a long time.

and McCain? … wowsers!

I think his pick of Sarah Palin was an *amazing* move. I have only seen her a few times but was impressed with her each time. I have slowly, but increasingly, been getting enthused with the McCain campaign. Now, I am totally energized.

Somebody on Fox News said this was like a great novel. I totally agree… GREAT plot twists, interesting characters and epic. And, … I wonder what Hillary thought/said when she found out the news concerning Palin?

Dear God …

by Randy on July 14, 2008

P1020903.JPG

Yesterday, Sunday morning… they youngin’s went and had church up on the high ropes course. I didn’t join them because of my pulled calf muscle. I really … honestly … truly … enjoy ropes courses. I did the high ropes the last time we were here at Ridgecrest. I had a blast. The zip line, sliding from 40,000 feet to 10 feet from tree to tree hanging from a wire was my absolute favorite.

While there was a lot of noise when it was my turn, I didn’t sound like Tarzan but I didn’t sound like a little girl either.

After waking up I had church at the coffee shop over a banana nut muffin.

The Gift of Freedom

by Randy on July 3, 2008

Excellent.

The Gift of Freedom
by Brenna Kate Simonds

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”

I’d probably read that in my Bible a hundred times, but on one particularly difficult day, I found myself wondering how on earth it could be true. If Jesus had already set me free, then why did I feel so bound up? Why did I still struggle with the same issues that I struggled with before I came to know Him? And if the Church is supposed to live in freedom, why did so many others, not just me, still seem to be in slavery? Why does freedom seem so unattainable?

And so began my journey to find out what freedom really is, and how can I walk in that reality.

I’ve come to believe that freedom is both a one-time gift and a process. The moment we come to Jesus Christ, He gives us freedom through the Holy Spirit, so that we are no longer slaves to sin (Romans 6:17-18). But that freedom is something we need to learn to walk out. …

Speaking of Palahniuk

by Randy on May 18, 2008

…Because we were you know.  I visited his website last night and found out he has a book due out next week named Snuff.

It’s fiction about some lady who stars in a porno with 600 other men.

I don’t need a telegram from the Angel Gabriel to figure out that there is absolutely zero reason to read that book.

Just sayin’

::: skipping it :::

Actually, I haven’t read any of his books since Stranger Than Fiction.

Three weeks ago I started getting sick and while on a trip I was knocked out with a horrible bug that wasn’t the flu but you sure couldn’t tell. So I went on some anti-biotics, Mucinex (*hate* their commercials), Sudafed and whatever. The antibiotics ran out last Thursday. I was a good good boy and took every last one of them.

Felt good on Friday. I even worked out all last week.

Saturday was back to not good. Sore throat and that uh oh… you have GOT to be kidding me feeling. Last night rolled around and it wasn’t going away and I found it hard to breath. Went back to the Minute Clinic and the lady there said that if I wasn’t good to go after what they had prescribed for me I needed to go to the real doctor (she is a nurse practitioner.)

Did I mention my ears were hurting? … especially the right one … and I have to get on a plane to fly across the country tomorrow. Thankfully my regular Doctor had a cancellation and I was able to get in today. Turns out the severe sinus infection of two weeks ago has turned into “acute sinusitis” and laryngitis. He also said that I was not contagious and assured me that my head would not explode in flight.

$120 later … forget the war on whining… I was ALL about the wah wah nyah nyah’s.

Focus On Exodus

by Randy on March 17, 2008

Former Exodus President Featured on Focus on the Family Broadcast
Orlando, FL- Tune in today and tomorrow to hear former Exodus International President Joe Dallas deliver a powerful message on how Christians should respond to the issue of homosexuality and to gay identified men and women.Alan Chambers’ new book God’s Grace & the Homosexual Next Door is a featured resource following this broadcast.

Listen to “How Should We Respond to Homosexuality?”

Order God’s Grace & the Homosexual Next Door

I read somewhere that Wayne Besen?  Or was it Mike Airhart? … they are beginning to act like one and the same destructive person, said that Focus on the Family had taken over Exodus.  Well, I tell ya’, that’s just crazy talk.  From the appearance of today’s www.family.org it would seem the reverse is true.   Joe Dallas is on the show, Alan’s book is the featured product and my interview on transgender issues in public schools is one of the line up of featured articles. (specifically on “Social Issues.”)

And they are featuring Love Won Out as well.

I love that Focus supports the work of Exodus.  Everyone I have met at Focus is a great person, I love that crew.  They are some of the most loving, and fun, people I have ever met.

While Focus doesn’t “own” Exodus, where our interests do line up, we make a great team.  I am glad to help them whenever possible.

Friday FiveFriday Five: Randy Thomas
by Devon Williams, associate editor’Gender identity is very important to God.’

Parents of children who struggle with gender confusion are being encouraged to raise their kids according to the gender they want to be.

Nationally, organizations are adopting gender-neutral restrooms.

And in California, students now can “choose their own gender” when deciding whether to use the boys’ or girls’ restroom and locker room.

According to the American Psychological Association, “transgender” is a term used to describe people whose self-perception differs from their biological gender. This condition is commonly referred to as gender identity disorder.

Randy Thomas is executive vice president of Exodus International, the largest worldwide Christian outreach to those affected by homosexuality. He spoke with CitizenLink about transgenderism and his own journey out of homosexuality…

The Woman At The Parking Lot

by Randy on March 9, 2008

Today started with only three hours of sleep.  With it being Daylight Savings it was pitch black when I left my humble abode to go to the airport.  So, I got a Starbucks and headed on in.

::: big Orbitz gum grin ::: It’s like sunshine in a cup!  Fabulous! ::: bing :::

I dropped my car off and got on the shuttle.  The shuttle could seat about ten people and several more could stand hanging on to rails.  I had never seen more that three or four people on it at a time. But this morning I was the fourth and considered it busy for a Sunday.   Just when I thought we were headed to the airport, the shuttle driver got a call that another person was in the lot needing a ride.  We made a turn to the right, instead of a left (to leave), and went to pick them up.

Blogger Dawn Eden on Today

by FayShakes on March 3, 2008

Blogger Dawn Eden appeared on Today this morning to discuss sexless dating and her book, The Thrill of the Chaste: Finding Fulfillment While Keeping Your Clothes On. Eden did a great job and I thought the segment was balanced in that both Eden and writer/DJ Jo Arden Maeder got equal time to express their views.

Predictably, Maeder offered the typical arguments that ran the gamut from the ol’ how-will-you-know-if-you’re-sexually-compatible line to ‘just do it.’

Kudos to Eden for summing it up with this point (around the 7:32 mark): “I just don’t want to have to separate out different parts of me. I want to learn how to give completely emotionally and then once I’m vowed and can give my body, I want to give that completely as well.”
