Religous Beliefs of College Faculty

The Institute for Jewish and Community Research of San Francisco published a study on the religious beliefs of college faculty. The study was conducted by Gary Tobin, Ph.D and Aryeh Weinberg. It’s major findings are not necessarily surprising. Here they are:

  • Most faculty believe in God, but atheism is significantly more prevalent among faculty than the general public.
  • Faculty are much less religious than the general public.
  • Religious beliefs of college faculty are highly associated with political identity and behavior.
  • Most faculty are secular or liberal.
  • Faculty feel warmly about most religious groups but feel coldly about Evangelicals and Mormons.
  • Faculty feel most unfavorably about Evangelical Christians.
  • Faculty are almost unanimous in their belief that Evangelical Christians (Fundamentalists) should keep their religious beliefs out of American politics.
  • Although faculty generally oppose religion in the public sphere, many endorse the idea that Muslims should express their religious beliefs in American politics.

Of course, this is no surprise. And, in light of the upcoming release of the Ben Stein documentary Expelled, the notion of the thought police and intellectual intolerance becomes more realistic.

Shut Up! - but I Can’t

dietcoke A person left the following comment in queue for the latest Huckabee thread. He, the person leaving the comment, was banned from the blog 2 (3?) years ago. I can’t remember. Anyway, this person who can’t get enough of my blog says … again …

Oh God please just shut up.

:::: silence ::: sipping diet caffeine free coke ::: listening to Fox News transmitting more subliminal messages from Big Brother ::: rubbing cheeks and thinking that since it is 2 pm I should probably shave … nah … it’s Saturday, maybe around 5 or so… got a concert to go to tonight ::: content sigh ::: I can’t believe Darth Vader is one of my twitter friends ::: He’s really funny ::: Speaking of funny, that commercial where the girl runs into the car … and then the follow up where she does it again … hilarious ::: oh and … I am still not gay ::: Larry, my peace lilly, is doing GREAT in his new pot, lots of new leaves ::: my feet are cold, best go get some thick socks :::

::: gone to go get my socks :::

::: I’m back now ::: still haven’t said a word ::: Mort (the Beltway Boys) should not be wearing a orange based red tie ::: another sip of diet caffeine free coke ::: Doom Moment (happens once every 13 minutes) … what if Big Brother isn’t really Big “Brother”, what if he turns out to be Hillary Clinton in ‘08?!… popping anti-depressants ::: End Doom Moment :::
::: Acorns keep dropping off the trees and hitting my roof. They have been doing that for weeks now ::: We turn our clocks back an hour tonight … woot! ::: I met some more of my neighbors last night, they are from Bwahston :D :::

::: what if I am Big Brother? ::: pensive look ::: scandalous ::: oh wait … Big Brother shaves on Saturday … whew! :::

Apparently, I am not so good at shutting up. Glad to know you are still reading. I think you’ll figure out in maybe another 2 or 3 years that I am really not that scary.

LOOK! It’s Ben Stein! … woot … I met him at the VIP reception. Check out the other pictures I took at the Washington Briefing.

This will conclude my formal posts on the event ::: whew ::: I am about ready to move on to other things. There is one topic that is still lodged in my brain but I think it is represented by the Briefing but is a manifestation of something larger and more long running than the briefing. That will come when it finishes baking in the inferno of my mind.

Washington Briefing - Ben Stein

Ben SteinBen Stein was absolutely amazing. I love the guy. He is a true intellectual AND funny. An amazing man. They showed the trailer for his new movie Expelled. I won the lottery by being born in the United States. His patriotism and gratefulness to God was inspiring and infectious.

His new movie will be about how it has become dangerous to question Darwinism in the academic and scientific communities.

He has been warned to not speak out about this, that it could lead to the ruin of his career. He states that if intellectual inquiry can lead us back to God he is willing to take the risk…. Very cool. I wish he would run for President. :)
