A Memoir Conundrum

by Randy on May 17, 2008

I was in DC last week for a Pastor’s conference. It ended Friday around 2pm and our next meeting was really a birthday party at 6pm. In between I took a nap and then went to Barnes & Noble. While there I saw a book by Augusten Burroughs called A Wolf At The Table. I picked it up and read the jacket. It looked to be very traumatizing and I didn’t really need that at that moment.

I am being honest in that I have not ever heard of Burrough’s before. I had heard of “Running with Scissors” in passing but didn’t register what it was about. Meaning, I know I saw the headline somewhere or maybe passed by the book in a bookstore thinking it was a clever title. But other than that I had no idea who the author was or what was in the book. Because Wolf At The Table looked intriguing I found his other books on the shelf and saw Running With Scissors. I thought, “Well, I need to read something on the plane home. Plus I am into memoirs lately and this is a memoir sooo…” I bought it. As my co-worker Mark and I headed to the register I said, “I have been reading memoirs by two authors who happen to be gay, I hope he (Burroughs) isn’t gay too.”

Chasing the Sunset - Flying To San Jose

by Randy on February 28, 2008

Today I flew from Orlando to San Jose through Atlanta. I parked my car at a place just down the street from OIA. The shuttle picked up another gentlemen after me who had a very nice car.   Not inordinately expensive but still quite nice. I have no idea what kind of car it was but I liked it’s style. As he scooted by on the shuttle I blurted out in my unabashed extrovert way, “groovy car.” He said, “Thanks, it’s the last one ever made, I flew to Minnesota to pick it up.”

I smiled and said, “wow” nodding my head. Something in me just didn’t quite believe the story. Plus my head was hurting and that makes me grumpy.

Birds Eye View

by Randy on January 17, 2008

Things that cause ponderous marveling from the window seat of a plane….

Looking out and down on a chain of thunderstorms with frequent lightning, night or day they are marvelous.
Flying over a solid cloud bank, at night, with a full moon.
Also, flying over a city, at night. It looks like someone threw out myriads of jewels over black velvet.
Flying over a city and being able to take in the entire city and suburbs with one view.
Flying over the Rocky Mountains.
Flying over the hills of the mid-Atlantic when the leaves are turning in the Fall.

What are your favorite views from an airplane?

JAMES BLUNT LYRICS - You’re Beautiful

by Randy on January 20, 2006

Visit James Blunt’s official website … its a little kooky. I like it.

JAMES BLUNT LYRICS (radio edit version.)

      “You’re Beautiful”

      My life is brilliant.

      My life is brilliant.
      My love is pure.
      I saw an angel.
      Of that I’m sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
      She was with another man.
But I won’t lose no sleep on that,
      ‘Cause I’ve got a plan.

      You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.
      You’re beautiful, it’s true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don’t know what to do,
‘Cause I’ll never be with you.

      Yeah, she caught my eye,
      As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
      Flying high,
And I don’t think that I’ll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

      You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.
      You’re beautiful, it’s true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don’t know what to do,
‘Cause I’ll never be with you.

      You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.
      You’re beautiful, it’s true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it’s time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.

This guy’s voice is unique and wonderful.

This song made me think of one particular woman I once saw in 1993 and several more that caused me to pause in wonder over the years. I love that the song is just completely unique in it’s modern context regarding lyrics and the subject matter. It is different than the norm and thankfully so. I am going to go download it off iTunes right now.
