Nothing To Be Proud About

by Randy on June 5, 2008

Sao Paulo Gay pride parade drew record attendance. The following is from gay activist Chris Crain’s blog and written by Kevin:

“… what is most remarkable about São Paulo pride is its utter failure to articulate even the most basic message. Beyond a few pronouncements and a banner or a website, a coherent message of any kind fails to reach anyone in the street. Instead, the Parada is a sea of drunken recklessness, criminal violence and disturbing overcrowding which has begun to actually drive the resident gay population of the city away from it. The organizers are very competent in breaking world attendance records, but are hopelessly inept at finding some way to truly organize the attendees around any sense of mission or purpose beyond getting loaded, and getting laid.”

[From Citizen Crain: Pride?]

Seems like nothing has changed since I went to these types of events back in the day… well except our events didn’t have millions of people. His article goes on to describe robbery, murder and what appears to be a tragic accidental death of a young man partying at a local hotel. For those who don’t know, June is a big gay “pride” month. These parades happen around this time of year.

Anatomy of Migraine

by Randy on June 3, 2008

Last night I went to bed with a headache. I woke up with a headache. I took some Advil right after getting to work … no effect. In fact it got worse.

Light started stabbing me … mercilessly.
Then I could smell a fly fart from three miles away.
Every little smell is magnified to something otherworldly.
Do people have to whisper so loudly?
Then my thoughts started to scatter. Not to the point of confusion but … not normal.
…and feel free to whip out the scatter brained jokes, I deserve them

These are the first signs I have of a developing migraine.

A Memoir Conundrum

by Randy on May 17, 2008

I was in DC last week for a Pastor’s conference. It ended Friday around 2pm and our next meeting was really a birthday party at 6pm. In between I took a nap and then went to Barnes & Noble. While there I saw a book by Augusten Burroughs called A Wolf At The Table. I picked it up and read the jacket. It looked to be very traumatizing and I didn’t really need that at that moment.

I am being honest in that I have not ever heard of Burrough’s before. I had heard of “Running with Scissors” in passing but didn’t register what it was about. Meaning, I know I saw the headline somewhere or maybe passed by the book in a bookstore thinking it was a clever title. But other than that I had no idea who the author was or what was in the book. Because Wolf At The Table looked intriguing I found his other books on the shelf and saw Running With Scissors. I thought, “Well, I need to read something on the plane home. Plus I am into memoirs lately and this is a memoir sooo…” I bought it. As my co-worker Mark and I headed to the register I said, “I have been reading memoirs by two authors who happen to be gay, I hope he (Burroughs) isn’t gay too.”

30 Again Party

by Randy on May 12, 2008

30 again party :)

Last Friday I went to my favorite DC restaurant Rosa Mexicano with two other May babies and a friend.  We had a “30 Again” party but I don’t have any problem saying I will be 40 on Wednesday the 14th.

I have about 27 hours left in my thirties and I haven’t taken over the world yet …  I need to get goin’.

There’s No Place Like Northern California

by Randy on February 28, 2008

From Travel

San Jose is cool but … I won’t get to see it beyond my hotel. The meeting today was in one of the ball rooms and it was terrific. We gave all of the information away and had great conversations with a bunch of pastors. Northern California is truly different than anywhere else in the country.

Third Party Viability

by Randy on February 14, 2008

I am ok with voting for McCain. I am praying for a miracle Huckabee win but … I am ok with voting for McCain. He irritates me and I don’t trust him on some issues. I do see him as a fixture of the “establishment.” That said, I like that he would keep us safe in the war on terror, is pro-life and will appoint conservative Judges.

But … once Hillarack Obamaton (sounds like a transformer huh?) is defeated… like the very next day… I am hoping that a truly viable third party will develop for the 2010 elections and especially by 2012.

I’ve just about had it with both parties. They are too comfortable and manipulative.

Obama The Statesman

by Randy on February 12, 2008

Proverbs 19:18 lets us know that people are always searching for “vision” of the bigger picture. Without it we are chaotic and have no restraint. Proverbs is specifically talking about God’s will and our needing His vision. I take this to also mean that we are created to look beyond ourselves for “vision.” Without a vision that brings common unity (community) are experience as human “beings” is incomplete.

When I watched the above video, I found it very compelling … very compelling. I think Obama is a socialist with regard to his public policy views that have not been fully explained so far. I believe his beautiful words are lacking true substance to actually carry out the well articulated vision. Knowledge does not equate the wisdom practical application obvious in his short time of leadership at a federal level and never in an Executive capacity. I worry that he will be swept into office to only create a whole new set of divisions, anger and disappointment. A lot of people see him as the answer but no one is asking him the tough questions.

The ACLU Invites Me to The Party

by Randy on January 28, 2008

aclu-invite.jpgOne of the odd things in life that changes once you become a home owner is how your mailbox fills up with even more stuff “to consider.” For example, I have gotten several new charities trying to get me to support them. All of them so far have been worth while causes that I had heard of but not ever contacted before. I love the free return address labels.

Little sidenote. I don’t like writing my return address on all my snail mail … boring. I am using these labels even though they are of Christmas ornaments (should last through March), Ziggy chasing hearts around (got a ton of these….I am good through September) and some other design that looks like it was drawn by a 9th grade girl bored in English class (should finish out my return address needs for 2008.)

Back to the point, the ACLU (aka American Civil Liberties Union … or … Anti-Christian Liberties Union) cold calls mails me an invitation to join them in their efforts (click picture for full affect. I added the Ziggy sticker.)

Who Am I Going to Cheer for in the Super Bowl?

by Randy on January 21, 2008

::: roll eyes ::: Listen, I hate it when Tiger Woods can’t hit his foul shots, he cries too much.  So, if there is a way to figure this out … I think they should just split the Stanley Cup right down the middle so we can all be winners!  Doesn’t that sound GREAT!
