by Randy on September 4, 2008

Kissing Cops Lawsuit Settled

by Randy on September 2, 2008

I got this via email from the Florida Family Policy Council (linkage and emphasis mine) More thoughts after the jump …KissingCops.jpg

‘Kissing cops’ lawsuit settled
The Good News 08/01/08

—The federal civil rights lawsuit brought by Florida Family Policy Council against a Sunrise police officer for harassment of marriage amendment supporters at the 2006 Promise Keepers conference was resolved last week

The 2007 federal court lawsuit filed against City of Sunrise police officer Sergeant Stephen Allen and Broward County for improperly prohibiting marriage amendment petitions from being distributed at a 2006 Promise Keepers conference has been settled for $30,000.

At the Policy Council’s table, volunteers were collecting petitions to get the Florida Marriage Amendment on the ballot. The Amendment would define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Accordingly to recorded statements from eye witnesses, Sgt. Allen, the duty officer hired by the Broward-owned civic center, informed the Policy Council’s volunteers that the marriage amendment petitions could not be collected or be in “public view” and must be immediately removed.

The volunteers said they were mocked, harassed and threatened with being arrested for collecting the petitions, and then Allen personally confiscated the petitions. Sgt. Allen and Officer M. Allard, both male officers, further ridiculed the effort by appearing to kiss each other. …

Ann Coulter Attacks Joe Biden

by Randy on August 28, 2008

I watched the speech last night and I wondered why Joe went on and on about his family but why he didn’t mention his Dad? That is a true thought that came to mind during his speech. His Mom was cute … she obviously loved her son and was enjoying the moment. If he mentioned his Dad I don’t remember it.

I felt sympathy and shades of empathy for Senator Biden during his speech when he was talking about his home life and the tragedy of the early death of his first wife. His son was amazingly moving when recounting his memories of his Dad during that time. However, there has always been something about Biden that just hit me as a little fake. I am not sure I quite believe everything else he is saying.

Now … Ann is … well … Ann. She really tears into him regarding the allegations of plagiarism against him. Here she is on a part of his family life he didn’t share. The quote and more thoughts after the jump.

Democratic Convention

Image from Fox News linked below.

Hillary Clinton placed her trust in Barack Obama to lead the Democratic agenda from the White House Tuesday night in Denver, calling on her party with a renewed sense of urgency to close ranks behind the presumptive nominee after their tense primary fight.

“We don’t have a moment to lose or a vote to spare,” the former first lady said at the close of her headlining address at the Democratic National Convention.

The speech was a direct appeal to her supporters to set aside hurt feelings and back her former opponent.

It was for her campaign a dramatic moment of closure. The crowd, waving signs emblazoned with “Unity” and both Democratic candidates’ names, rose to its feet as flashbulbs fired at the end of the address.

Backtrack to Saddleback by Albert Mohler

by Randy on August 19, 2008

Albert Mohler writes honestly about how he was *not* excited about the event before hand but his opinion changed to a good degree afterward … (more and my thoughts after the jump)

With the press pushing the event as a “new face” for American evangelicals, I was not overly hopeful. Given the hype, I was positively unhopeful. But . . . the event turned to be quite worthwhile after all. I still have deep reservations about identifying the event so closely with a church, but the conversations really did get to urgently important and controversial issues, and Pastor Rick Warren handled the conversations with aplomb, demonstrating both civility and candor.

Greg asks

*Should Rick Warren court Presidential Candidates and possibly support an abortion rights candidate just so he can promote social justice and Green policies?”

When I think of “courting” in political realms I think of superficial flattery and pandering. So, I might be thrown by that word. But this question, for me, points to the broader issue of the merit of Warren’s event and who should Christians support. The last I checked, neither candidate has stated, “I want to be President to glorify Jesus Christ and bring more people into relationship with Him.” It’s very complex. Both candidates could be accused of promoting sin in public policy. Both candidates could be accused of ungodly decisions. At the same time, both candidates must be very talented to be the two men being considered for President. I think Pastor Warren is doing a great thing by having this forum and I hope it is very revealing for the Body of Christ and the country at large.

Authentic Blogging

by Randy on August 13, 2008

This is an excellent blogpost and a good reality check for those who blog. I love the Problogger blog and find it helpful even for us non-pro bloggers :). At the end of the post they ask,

Have you ever had a ‘defining moment’ in your blogging? What did you learn? What decisions did you make? How have you gone since changing your approach?

[From Authentic Blogging]

I have had many defining moments blogging but the first one that came to mind is a recent conclusion about blogging public policy. I realized I really didn’t like blogging about it anymore :). My opinions on such matters didn’t change. I haven’t stopped following or working toward accomplishing specific goals … offline. I still have a McCain “widget” in the sidebar of my blog but … you haven’t seen a whole lot of extensive public policy tracking lately on purpose.

CDC Underestimates US HIV Cases by 40%

by Randy on August 4, 2008

Somehow the huge increase has always been there and not known so that equals the same old same old just more of it … right? I love spin doctors (emphasis mine): More thoughts after the jump.

The improved science will allow more real-time monitoring of HIV infections. Now, CDC officials say, the estimate will likely be updated every year.

Yearly estimates allow better recognition of trends in the U.S. epidemic. For example, the new report found that infections are falling among heterosexuals and injection drug users.

Some experts celebrated that finding, saying it’s a tribute to prevention efforts, including nearly 200 syringe exchange programs now operating in 36 states despite a federal ban on funding for such projects.

But they also lamented the CDC’s finding that infections continue to increase in gay and bisexual men, who accounted for more than half of HIV infections in 2006. Also, more than a third of those with HIV are younger than 30.

Some advocates say that suggests a need for more prevention efforts, particularly targeting younger gay and bisexual men.

For years, AIDS was considered a terrifying death sentence, and since 1981, more than half a million Americans have died. But medicines that became available in the 1990s turned it into a manageable chronic condition for many Americans, and attention shifted to Africa and other parts of the world.

War Over Words in Proposition 8

by Randy on July 30, 2008

Commentary from FRC after the jump …

Supporters of Proposition 8, the proposed state constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, said they would file suit today to block a change made by California Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown to the language of the measure’s ballot title and summary.

Petitions circulated to qualify the initiative for the ballot said the measure would amend the state Constitution “to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
